Is America too cheap to eat healthy?

Our economy is failing at the moment and food is becoming more expensive. The junk foods with higher calories are the least expensive for some reason.  The healthier choices in grocery stores cost more than the unhealthy foods.  This may cause more people to gain weight in the United States of America because everyone wants to go with the cheaper choice. The cheaper foods have more calories than the more expensive ones. This is probably because of some of the agricultural polices on growing food and processing food. Cookies and chips cost less because they are easier to ship unlike a few apples that have the possibility of being bruised. The rising food prices are going to make more people in America more obese.

  1. This is a very true article. This discovery has a huge impact all of us. Do you really want to gain weight because your cheap or just cant afford healthy food? NO! Even in my personal experiences at the grocery i've noticed you can buy way more junk food for the same price as just a couple of healthy things.

  2. I like this article because it shows one of the reasons why people eat so unhealthy. Some people can’t afford healthy foods so they buy the cheapest stuff they can find. Hopefully in the future healthy foods will lower the price so more people can afford a healthier lifestyle.

  3. i think that teh chip makers and see this financial crisis and know that people with thin pockets will buy cheaper "stuff". for many families im sure it is hard to put nice healthy meals on the table every night, so they just buy what they can and what they need to get through, which is all the unhealthy calorie loaded junk.
this is sort of a big deal

  4. The economic crisis does play a huge role in unhealthy eating habits. The only food suppliers we see truly cutting down on prices are fast food restaurants For instance, McDonalds offers a 99 cent menu as well as Arbys and other fast food restaurants.

  5. To me, making foods with more calories less expensive is a stupid thing to do because like you said in the summary, this will make more people gain weight. I think a good idea would be to do the opposite. Make the high calorie foods more expensive and the low calorie foods less expensive. If the high calorie foods are more expensive, then the economy will make a lot more money because SO many people eat fast food and will eat it if they do not already have a meal prepared. If low calorie foods are cheaper, this will add even more money to the economy because the people that DO eat healthy will buy even more low calorie foods...

  6. This is a very true article, I've never even thought about it before.
Since fast food places like McDonalds, Taco Bell, or Wendy's have a dollar menu, or some sort of menu like the dollar menu. People are more likely to lean towards those places. And this is mabey one of the reasons why, people are unhealthy.

  7. If I were to give my thoughts on this story it would just be repetitive of what is written above. The only other thing I have to point out is that the lower your economic status the more likely you are to be over weight not just because of these foods but they do not have the time in their day to exercise.

  8. I think that this is a great point. It seems as though America IS to cheap to eat healthy. Its quite sad really. We as a nation, are to concerned with the failing economy, that we turn to save a quick buck by eating at a fast food corporation, which will lead to weight gain. This topic was well chosen and i think that the author did a great job of letting us know the facts of what is going on. nbd.
